John ‘Shark’ Hanlon, a prominent figure in the racing world, hails from the Kilkenny/Carlow border, carrying the nickname ‘Shark’ since a memorable hurling game in Kilkenny. His unique moniker emerged when he played full forward, earning recognition for his strategic ball handling. The name stuck, and ‘Shark’ became a notable presence in the racing scene.

Coming from a lineage deeply rooted in cattle dealing, John’s grandfather, father, and himself have been involved in the trade for generations. A fateful collaboration with George Mullins sparked his entry into the world of horse racing. Their shared ownership of The Crazy Bishop, a somewhat unconventional but successful runner, marked the beginning of John’s journey in the racing industry.

Over the years, John transitioned from working with renowned trainers like Tony Mullins to establishing his own training venture. The foot and mouth crisis in 2001 prompted a shift towards horse training, focusing initially on pre-training for point-to-points. His first notable success was Wolseley Lady, a point-to-point winner turned successful racer.

Noteworthy horses like Diman and Luska Lad, a consistent performer in graded races, added to John’s growing reputation. Hidden Cyclone, despite never clinching a Grade 1 victory, brought immense joy to the team.

Skyace, acquired for a nominal sum, became a standout mare, winning the Grade 1 mares’ novices’ hurdle at Fairyhouse. The victory was a dream realised for John and his team. Shark has an eye for a bargain having bought Hewick for €850 he has turned the once written off horse into a worldwide star. He is living the dream with his star charge, since purchasing him he has trained him to win The Galway Plate, The Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown, The American Grand National at Far Hills New Jersey, and this season The Ladbrokes King George VI Chase (Grade 1) at Kempton. The horse has now amassed £613, 359 in earnings.
